Curriculum

Curriculum

At the South Derbyshire Support Centre, we are fully committed to providing a purposeful and empowering curriculum that fully prepares our pupils for the next steps in their school journey, as well as the challenges for the wider world of Post 16 education, training and employment. We believe that every child has the opportunity to fulfil their full potential, regardless of their starting points or specific educational needs. We recognise pupils’ prior learning gaps, literacy and numeracy skills and provide first-hand learning experiences that allows each individual to develop and enhance their interpersonal skills such as communication, citizenship, character and build resilience and independence.

Our curriculum embraces the community in which it is situated, recognising local history, heritage, geographical and business links and most importantly, the aspirations of all our pupils which for some is incredibly challenging due to broken mainstream placements. We place strong emphasis on rebuilding the confidence of each pupils by ensuring they develop the spiritual, moral, social and cultural skills needed to mature at the Centre and in the community. The development of all our pupils is underpinned by partnership working with many agencies and being ‘Stronger Together’ is incredibly important to us as we are proud to be part of The Esteem Multi Academy Trust.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual and our provision engages and challenges our pupils to achieve even if they are only placed with us for a short time. We celebrate and welcome differences within our centre community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values and by Key stage 4 if pupils remain with us, pupils will acquire a qualification set that is ambitious and supportive to ensure our young people obtain placements at an appropriate destination. We constantly provide an array of enrichment opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge now and in the future.

We want to create success for our pupils, offer extensive opportunities so they achieve their potential and give them purpose once again. South Derbyshire Support Centre is proud to be based in Newhall and will continue to produce the role models the community needs.

Expectations:

Often learners with more challenging needs are educated outside of mainstream provisions and there is a distinct difference to the expectations placed on behaviour and the content of learning so these gaps widen in some cases. We do not believe that the young people of South Derbyshire Support Centre should attend and not reintegrate back in to mainstream provisions or further education, training or employment. Therefore, our expectations must mirror that of mainstream to best help prepare these amazing young people to succeed once they leave us.

We expect our young people to make progress academically, socially and emotionally and re-build their confidence where mainstream placements have broken in the past. We also provide a rich experientially experience linked to careers and guidance so pupils are exposed to the real world and are ready to take their place in work and contribute as they leave education. Through a bespoke and holistic support provision, we ensure that our curriculum meets the needs of the pupils, it is ambitious but also relevant to provide the necessary knowledge, skills and experiences for the young people we serve.
